Are Plug-in Solar Panels Worth It In Sussex?

You may have seen the recent news about the government making plug-in solar panels available in the UK over the coming months.
Already popular in continental Europe, especially the Netherlands and Germany, they promise to make solar power available to those who can’t traditionally benefit, such as renters or those who live in flats. Although already available to buy in the UK, they have been illegal to use in any home that’s connected to the grid.
But what are they and how do they work? What returns could you expect to see on your home in Sussex? And are they too good to be true?
Let’s find out.
What are plug-in solar panels?
Plug-in solar panels are small units designed to plug directly into your home's plug sockets to power your home and reduce your bills. You might also see them referred to as Plug-and-Play, Balcony or DIY Solar. In the UK, they’re intended for small spaces, such as balconies, garden fences, or shed roofs, and will be limited to 800W per system. Renters or those who can’t install a full roof-mounted system are the target market.
How do plug-in solar panels work?
They work in the same way as any other solar panel, but instead of being wired directly into your home’s electrics, they are plugged into the socket via a microinverter. This converts the direct current (DC) from the panel to the alternating current (AC) that your appliances use. Many will come with mounting kits that allow them to be installed on balconies, fences, the ground or on small roofs.
As with all solar, they’ll benefit from having plenty of sunshine and unobstructed, south- or south-west/east-facing views. Luckily, we have plenty of both here in Sussex, so it’s likely your panel will work well.
How Much Money Will I Save With a Plug-in Solar Panel in Sussex?
An 800W panel should produce between 200 and 500kWh per year, and with the energy price cap currently at 24.67p per kWh until 30th June 2026, we expect that people in Sussex could save between £50 and £150 per year with a plug-in solar panel.
You might wonder whether you can have multiple panels, but each system will be limited by law to 800W for safety and to protect your home’s wiring. While the panels themselves may be able to generate more than 800W, the microinverters control how much goes into your home.
How much will plug-in solar panels cost?
We don’t know how much the systems will cost yet, but we expect prices to be between £400 and £1,000, depending on the number of panels, the mounting kit and whether you add battery storage.
For comparison, people in Germany typically pay between €400 and €800 for an 800W system without storage. However, Germans pay 0% VAT on plug-in panels, and many cities offer subsidies to further reduce costs.
How long does it take for plug-in solar panels to pay for themselves?
Most people should see a return on their investment within 3-5 years, depending on the price of the equipment, how much sun the panels get, additional storage, and how much electricity they use.
Plug-in Solar vs Roof-Mounted Solar PV Systems

While plug-in solar is helpful for people who can’t have a full, roof-mounted system, it is not a replacement. We’ve installed thousands of solar PV systems in Sussex, and we know that the average household uses around 5,500 kWh of electricity per year.
As we’ve seen, you can expect around 500kWh per year from a plug-in kit. So while a plug-in panel can save some money on your bills, and is certainly better than nothing, it can’t generate enough electricity to reliably power your home in the long-term or to provide true energy security.
Although more of an investment, a traditional solar PV system will have a noticeable impact on your bills, and with battery storage, you can be completely self-sufficient in case of grid failure. What’s more, you can sell power back to the grid during peak hours, use your panels to charge an EV, or power a heat pump.
Are Plug-in Solar Panels Worth It?
Yes, in some circumstances. If you can’t have normal, residential solar and have a suitable place for the panels, plug-in solar could help you save some money on your bills during daytime hours. But for most homes, a traditional install is a much more efficient and reliable approach.
